Playland Main4

The creative process has fascinated me for as long as I can remember. In all art forms, how that original spark of inspiration leads you on a journey – how ideas get processed, executed & eventually become a reality. Often you can’t pinpoint how things fall into place but if you allow yourself to be led it can be such FUN!

At Playland Motel in the Rockaways, the journey for me & my Rawlins Calderone partner, John Rawlins, was an organic process where ideas morphed into other ideas – collaborators & artists seemed to magically & collectively unite.

Playland was presented to me though my friend Ben Pundole of A Hotel Life & Robin Scott, a Playland owner. Playland asked 12 artists connected to art, design, or surfing  to donate their time to design a singular motel room in an effort to support the Rockaway community after the devestation of hurricane Sandy. I was super excited & inspired to get creative on a limited budget, get my hands dirty doing the labor ourselves, & get crafty.

That initial spark of inspiration came when I saw a simple line drawn card of a surfboard on a friend’s fridge.  In that very moment I also snooped my instagram to find the most incredible wall drawings by artist Shantell Martin on the Suno feed, not so dissimilar to the line art card I held in my hand…only magnified! Seeing Shantell’s work resulted in an explosion of creative ideas that had John sketching away. As idea’s began flowing I reached out to a team of kindred, artistic spirits, each committed to their respective craft & inspired to be part of the rebuilding of the Rockaways. I wanted the palette of the room to be bright and bold, inspired by the sea yet realized with unpredictable details like the colorful marine rope applied to the walls.

My personal connection to surfing is through my 10 year old grom, Jivan.  Jivan swoons his Super Brand surfboard so I went out on a limb and asked if they might consider donating a board for our cause. And BOOM they did – the donated board became an additional canvas for Shantell’s inner vision!  When Aussie Surfer/Set-builder Bruce Raubenheimer joined our team & donated his expertise to craft assorted built-in features for the room, our team was completed!

Rockaway Playland Motel Room #5 has been dubbed “The Super Collective”  since collectively we pulled together a “SUPER” fun room at Playland! Thank you team for your time & creativity! Check out our room on Refinery 29!
