Design Room Swoon:

Room Swoon: Nate Berkus & Jeremiah Brent’s Meditation Room

Words by Sacha Strebe.

If like us, you’re driven by an insanely curious nature, then you also jump at the chance to peek inside other people’s homes, explore their creative process, and interpret their visual language into your own spaces. Unlocking the kernel of inspiration that gave rise to a design idea or interior vision has always been what fascinates us more than the finished look. It’s this preoccupation for the behind-the-scenes that gave birth to our Room Swoon series. So join us as we tap into our inner voyeur for a captivating glimpse into spaces we love and the design spark that inspired it—then shop the look to bring it home. Next up, Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent’s meditation room.

If we were asked to use one word to describe Nate Berkus and Jeremiah’s former Los Angeles home it would be patina. The revered interior design duo is always foraging through vintage and antique stores, fairs, and auctions (both IRL and online) to source soulful pieces that contrast the ornate with their gritty timeworn texture—the polished with the worn, always. They are masters of detail and connoisseurs of materials, styling ancient vessels in a modern context. The secret? Grounding everything in a controlled neutral palette of white, black, shades of grey, and earthy hues. While every room has its own story to tell, it’s their meditation room that revealed an audible gasp.

This stylish space has both Berkus’ and Brent’s design fingerprints. It’s a stylish culmination of traditional forms with a contemporary complexion. As Athena wrote about their home in Live Beautiful, “It is a dazzling display of aesthetic eras and textures, yet they live in harmony, like the range notes in a symphony… it is masterfully composed and artfully intimate.”

We are in celebration mode this week with the news that Live Beautiful has sold over 250,000 copies and is now in its 13th printing. So, we’re sharing some of our favorite spaces from the book so you can shop the look and bring it home. Read on for all the pieces you need to recreate this striking meditation room—happy decorating!

“Seeing something new and innovative in a space that feels old, seeing people live a life that’s modern by definition in a space that isn’t, is riveting to us both.”

— Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent from Live Beautiful
