Bon Appétit x iPhone Travel Issue

It’s 12 p.m., there’s a pristine and cloudless blue sky, an icy bucket of paletas is threatening to melt under the sun, and I have a mezcal hibiscus cocktail in one hand and a rajas memela in the other.  The only reason to put either one of these swoony concoctions down is to whip out my iPhone to capture the colorful and perfectly textured images adorning the wall. For all intents and purposes one would assume I was in Oaxaca, Mexico, but no, yesterday I was on a Tribeca rooftop celebrating the cover of the May travel issue of Bon Appétit. It was shot by photographers Peden + Munk  on an iPhone 7 in the Tlacolula Market of Oaxaca.

All the pretty pictures you see here as well as the images cladding that highly-photogenic wall were shot just like the professionals now do…using a smartphone. Bon Appétit is among the first few major magazines to have photographed their cover image with an iPhone.

The mag threw a rooftop shindig to celebrate, and I joined alongside Peden + Munk and a talented crew of creatives, freelance food writer Alison Roman, chef Camille Becerra, photographer Andrea Gentl, food photographer Daniel Krieger and chef Dan Kluger. We chowed down on scrumptious recipes from Bon Appetit’s cover story as we all snapped pics and Peden + Munk shared their journey shooting the story. The truth is, even the pros appreciate not having to lug around their DSLR on their adventures!

Take a peek at the Bon Appétit feature. It’s sunshine-y, swoony proof that it’s about not what you have (okay, as long as you have a camera phone), it’s about how you use it. I see lots of unfettered, DSLR-free travels in my future.

And no, this is not a sponsored post. I was just honestly blown away by the beauty of this story and inspired to share!
