Simply Elevate Your Kitchen

Because of EyeSwoon, my kitchen is likely the most photographed room in my home.  Truth be told, the kitchen was also the easiest to elevate to my swoony standards. When I purchased this DUMBO apartment the kitchen was delivered as is, WELL almost!  I choose to manipulate a few small design details that made a world of a difference.

The gray cabinets were in fact chosen by the developer and the perimeter of those said cabinets were ordinary stacked plywood.  To infuse the most minor touch of elegance I ordered standard 3/4 inch brass stripping, from an online source, and clad the ho-hum plywood with brass edging.  Additionally, a major addition to this space was changing the lighting that hung above the island.  I desired sophistication to warm up this overly modernist space and chose two Thomas O’Brian Goodman pendants with intricate brass chain and golden interior, picking up the brass edging in the cabinetry.

The pendants immediately added drama to the room, however in their original ivory sheen the contrast was far too distracting against the gray painted walls. So along with the newly painted walls encasing the kitchen, I painted the exterior of the pendants a matte graphite hue.

I share these simple tips and tricks as encouragement for you to get crafty creative; don’t be afraid to alter something that in theory is great but just needs a bit of a nudge to transform it to exceptional. In a sea of dark saturated tones and the slick marble surface, walnut wood – in the tractor stools and cutting boards -add a much needed earthy warmth to the kitchen.

  1. Goodman Pendant – This all-brass pendant adds an edgy yet polished & structured touch to any space. Hang this piece in its original white color, or get crafty and paint over it for a customized pop!

  2. BENJAMIN MOORE, CITY SHADOW – As you can tell, I love a deep, dark, smoky grey paint. That’s why I chose this shadowy grey to enhance the wall surrounding my kitchen and the duo of pendants.  It is AH-MAZE-ING what a little paint can do!

  3. aldo marble cheese board – The glossy white marble & walnut wood finish, of this cheese board, creates a beautiful contrast that is also expressed in my kitchen. It is a stunningly subtle addition to any kitchen surface.

  4. Taburet Stool – Sleek, stylish, & simple are the perfect words to describe the organic wooden stools that complete my kitchen. They are crafted so elegantly & acquire an almost rustic vibe that offers relief to the modernist space.

  5. Staub Teapot – As you may know by now, I absolutely SWOON for my matte black teapot… it’s a signature staple on my stove top!

  6. Brass stripping  – Adding the brass stripping to my cabinets seemed like such a small insignificant addition, but turned out to be a striking touch – proving that sometimes it’s the details that can transform a space completely.  I asked the metal resource to pre-drill the holes for easy application.

  7. Butcher Block Cutting Board – The richly dark hues of this brickwork patterned walnut cutting board binds together the overall aesthetic of the space.
