Depending on your approach, a blank canvas can either be incredibly daunting or an exciting opportunity. I typically tend to see it as the latter but a dose of trepidation and fear is always good fuel to fire the creative spark—wouldn’t you agree? When faced with a brand new space, there are limitless possibilities which is invigorating but also really overwhelming. In the end, you have to lean on your instincts and trust your gut, but above all, refine your direction.

The hardest part? The edit. Take time to really understand what you love (and most importantly, what you don’t) so you can get hyper clear on what you envision for the space. But don’t get hung up on the details. The design process is just that, a process, and you need to leave room for it to evolve and morph into several iterations along the way. In this case, the old adage rings true: it’s about the journey, not the destination.

That’s what happened to Athena during the redesign of her Amagansett family room. Through a small shift in materials and décor, she managed to completely transform the space. Changing the RH sofa’s slipcover from dark brown linen to a creamy white outdoor fabric offered a fresh look while the Tali Roth Empire Collections Venetian rug yielded a graphic yet elegant statement. The French 50’s walnut side table and Milo Baughman burl wood plinth insert warmth and contrast to an otherwise pale space. The result? A richly textured room of layered neutrals and sculptural details.

So many of you have DM’d, emailed, or commented with source requests for this room so today, we’re giving them to you along with some new options to “get the look” at home.

As always, have fun with design and enjoy the hunt!
