The Top Fall Décor Trends, According to Interior Design Experts

Words by Kerry Pieri.

Décor trends move a bit slower than those from the fashion runway—even with the warp speed cycle that social media provides. Many preeminent designers might even balk at the notion of trends (secure in the belief that what they design has the power to withstand space and time). But there’s no doubt that the zeitgeist, pop culture, the change of seasons, the ebb and flow of personal style, and mere whims can bring certain vibes to the forefront at any given time.

So, Eyeswoon asked six leaders in the field right now what they’re predicting for fall in the interior space. The Swedish design firm making waves with a new NYC fashion boutique, a fashion stylist taking her curation skills to the design world, a Portland powerhouse, and more, share what they foresee coming next in their projects—and your home.

A Return to Maximalism

For Toronto-based designer and curator, Montana Labelle, fall is for layering colors and textures in a way that stands in direct opposition to so much restrained minimalism in seasons past. “One trend we are noticing, and loving, is the move away from minimalistic spaces and the return of more textural and colorful materials,” she confirms. “We are particularly loving this trend in bathrooms and pulling a lot of inspiration from ‘70s design where we saw a lot of texture, mixed materials, patterns, and colorful stones. Everything from a unique marble vanity down to the bold stone accessories—there are so many different ways you can incorporate this trend into any space.”

Sculptural Metals

Joy Sauvage—who goes between NYC, LA, and Paris and came to interior design by way of fashion—is finding the beauty in rough-edged metals, preferably in black. “Whether rough or refined, the materials are cold and organic but with whimsical shapes, sophisticated designs,” she explains. ”For example, every home décor brand or reseller is showcasing wrought iron candelabras at the moment, they are curvy and playful yet incredibly crude at the same time. So whether the styles are Brutalism, Modernism, or even some Art Deco, I see more and more interest in hard metals in general, which I love. I think there is something very sexy about the contrast of organic elements worked into lyrical shapes. This might very well just be a personal projection having dreamt of a Diego Giacometti table forever!”

The Curated Dining Table

Swedish Design firm, Svenskt Tenn has been operating since 1924, but its recent design of Toteme’s new NYC boutique has given it some social media virality as of late, thanks in no small part to a photo-worthy Josef Frank sofa in a bold, eccentric fabric. For fall, the firm is predicting a continuation of that color and pattern story at dinner parties the world over. “Already last spring we noticed that the interest for the set table was growing among the customers at Svenskt Tenn,” they forecast. “This is a trend that will grow even more dominant during the fall of 2022. People enjoy gathering around the dinner table and showing their guests that they care about them both through the dishes served on the plates as well as through all the details you can decorate your table with. The key is ‘more is more.’ Yes, put on a tablecloth, and coasters, mix and match different cutlery and glasses.” We couldn’t agree more.

NATURAL SELECTION

Portland Oregon-based designer, Tiffany Thompson has her eye on keeping it real. Think raw stone pieces in their natural state as opposed to buffing them into a glossy form. “Trending items are tough for me because I believe in longevity and having pieces that are interchangeable throughout seasons and the years,” she states. “Great design is having pieces that can be brought alongside your journey within your home. Natural materials are more than a trend. They are here to stay and people truly appreciate the longevity and authenticity of these materials. There’s something beautiful about objects not being so pristine anymore. A celebration of texture and balance of materials. The world has been through a lot and we are a bit tougher than how we started out, so having materials that align with that sentiment like concretes, travertines, stones, and rough textures are being celebrated, and we’re pairing these with softer textures to create a beautiful juxtaposition. You can play with this aesthetic in large-scale pieces or with accessories.”

Organic Shapes in Stone

While Anna Karlin recognized the longevity of marble and stone overall, right now she’s feeling more fluid, organic shapes in her go-to marble and travertine. “I think objects with real permanence feel ever more relevant and nothing feels more long-lasting than marble and stone—a material I’ve always loved working with,” she says. “The Dimple Lamp is one of my favorite pieces in my collection.”

Modern Geometry

For New York-based designer, Alyssa Kapito, all of the soft, curving pieces that have ruled design—led by iconic designers like Royere—call for some straight lines for contrast. “Curved lines are here to stay, but I love seeing them punctuated by strong geometrics to create a wonderful conversation that feels very modern,” she advises.
