WORDS BY ATHENA CALDERONE
I have a reverence for the earth and all of its elements. I’m always seeking out its perfectly imperfect aesthetic to beautify my home. Over the years, I have covered my ceiling with clusters of cascading flowers, introduced seasonal branches to the kitchen island to add drama and verticality, recreated an Autumnal woodland scene in my living room, and foraged elements washed ashore from the sea for beachside dinners.
As I dove down the rabbit hole of discovery, researching water in its myriad forms for the Saratoga Supper Club, ice became my catalyst. Leveraging the power of water felt fresh and unexpected to me. Suddenly, a floodgate of new ideas and inspiration was unleashed. From here the concept for the dining table crystalized. As guests entered the great room for dinner, a monochromatic table was draped in floor-length white fabric to express the movement and fluidity of water. Design for me is just as much about restraint as it is about embellishment. Knowing that the pride of Saratoga is its cobalt blue hue, everything on the dining table was intentionally monolithic: white and transparent or silver and reflective to guide the eye.
"Design for me is just as much about restraint as it is about embellishment."

Somehow the humble nature of water reminded me of the minimal, streamlined, and often geometric forms of Brutalism. I asked myself: Is it crazy to design Brutalist ice candle holders? Fire and ice sculptures in asymmetrical, geometric blocks became the centerpiece of the table. Each one is uniquely different in form, height, and scale undulating down the table with taper candles. Ice, I decided, would be in lieu of flowers. Through all of my design work, I have expressed a fascination with planned irregularity, and juxtaposition and it brings me great joy to see the fire and water coexisting together in one act of creation.
Knowing how much my community loves to recreate these experiences at home, it was important to me that we share every single detail of the Saratoga Supper Club table. From the linens to the flatware and even the glassware I designed exclusively for this occasion, everything is available for purchase on eye-swoon.com.
